  • Teacher Roles from Harmer's slide presentation

THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER
Depending on the stages of the lesson, a teacher can act as an organizer, a tutor, a prompter, a controller, an assessor, an investigator, an advisor, a resource and a participant.
TASK 1
Work individually. First, read the following description of the different teacher roles adapted from Harmer's The Practice of English Language Teaching, then name them using the list of roles stated above.

A.   ____________________
The teacher is in complete charge of the class. He determines not only what the students do, but also when they speak and what language they use.  All the attention is focused on the front of the class and the teacher does most of the talking.

B.   ____________________
The teacher sees how well students are performing or how well they performed their work. Gentle correction and feedback are associated with this role.  Feedback should be given both on language use and activity content.             Feedback also means telling students what went right.

C.   ____________________
The teacher gives clear instructions about the task, gets the activity going and organizes feedback.

D.   ____________________
The teacher encourages students to participate, makes suggestions or clarifies the procedures to carry out the activity.  The teacher helps the students only when it is necessary without taking over from the students.

E.   ____________________
The teacher takes part in the activity as an equal.  The danger is that the teacher will tend to dominate the activity, but the benefit is that a good model for language use will be provided.

F.    ____________________
The teacher is always ready to offer help if it is needed.  The teacher makes herself available so that students consult her only when they wish.

G.   ____________________
The teacher acts as a coach when students are involved in self - study or when they are doing project work on their own choosing.  The teacher clarifies ideas, limits tasks and corrects drafts.

H.   ____________________
The teacher offers students advice on how to get the most out of their learning and what to do if they want to study more.

I.      ____________________
The teacher observes what works well in class and what does not; she tries out new techniques and activities and evaluates their appropriateness.

TASK 2
Compare your answers with a partner and check the correct ones.

  1. A controller.
  2. An assessor.
